How to tell if a tree needs to come down

by Fant's Landscape

A dead tree within reach of the house, a lean of more than 15 degrees over something it could hit, or roots that are half damaged are all reasons to have a tree looked at. That is University of Tennessee Extension's guidance, in plain words.

Dead trees and dead limbs

University of Tennessee Extension says dead trees within reach of a house or other target should generally come down.

A lean

A tree leaning more than 15 degrees over something it could hit generally means removal.

Damaged roots

A tree with half its roots damaged should probably come down.

Cracks, decay and weak forks

Cracks, decay and weak V-shaped forks are warning signs too.

Who is responsible

The same publication notes that if you have a hazard tree, you may be responsible for any damage it causes if it falls. For your own situation, ask your insurer or an attorney.

This is general guidance

This page cannot tell you whether your tree is dangerous. Someone has to look at it.
